Mountain bike enthusiasts in Orange County are a resilient bunch. Those that participated in last year’s successful 50 Mile Ride for Project Rwanda are determined to do it again this year – even if half of their intended route was nearly destroyed in the recent Santiago fires.

When I think of Rwanda, I think of two things: The genocidal political-tribal conflict in which some 800,000 died and the plight of endangered mountain gorillas that the dedication of American zoologist Diane Fossey made known around the world. More than a dozen years after the horror of the former, a host of individuals and organizations are trying to rebuild a society and an economy.

The Ibrahim Index, financed by Sudanese mobile phone magnate Mo Ibrahim,

THERE is very little to show for the $300bn in aid that has apparently been disbursed to the African continent since 1970. Economic growth and human development in Africa still lag behind the rest of the world. In part, this is because past aid flows were often spent to suit the geostrategic interests of the givers. Today, Africa represents less than 2% of world trade.

People gasped in horror when we told them we were going to Rwanda on holiday. 'It's so dangerous', 'Are you crazy' was the general response. So I'd like to set the record straight and let people know that Rwanda has to be one of the most beautiful and peaceful countries I have ever visited. They experienced a genocide too horrific to even contemplate. That was 13 years ago.
