You Are Invited! Join us August 30-31
for the 2008 Wooden Bike Classic

The Wooden Bike Classic is our annual multi-day bike festival designed to increase awareness of Rwanda as a tourism and cycling destination, as well as promote the development of an eco–tourism industry. Two highly successful events have been completed so far which have brought in cyclists from all over Rwanda, the U.S. and Europe. Plans are being made for the upcoming Wooden Bike Classic, we hope to see you there.

passport

Passports/Documentation:

A passport is required to enter Rwanda. For U.S. citizens, a visa is not required but the passport must be valid for 6 months after your departure date. Citizens of other countries should check with the Rwandan Embassy to determine entry requirements. U.S. Citizens can go to http://travel.state.gov for passport and travel information.

Visa:

Traveling into many countries will require a visa if you plan to leave the airport. There may be a entry and or departure fee. They will vary in price usually under $40 U.S.

Immunizations:

  • Yellow fever vaccination is required.  Do this early as travel clinics can be difficult to get into.
  • Malaria Pills recommended. Visit your doctor 6 weeks before your departure and get a prescription for malaria pills (prophylactics). Start taking your malaria pills before you depart as instructed by your doctor - usually 4 weeks.
  • MMR (Measles Mumps & Rubella)Please consult your doctor if you were born between 1956 and 1970, you may need a booster.
  • Consult your doctor - We strongly recommend that you consult your doctor or a travel clinic to see about the latest recommendations, as Project Rwanda does not provide medical advice.

Technology

  • If you bring a laptop or other electronics you will need the EU plug as an adaptor with a 220V. 
  • There is good coverage for cell phones if you have the correct phone.
  • There is Internet access in a few hotels and Internet Café’s.

Language

money

Money

The unit of currency is the Rwanda franc. The US dollar is the hard currency of preference. It may be impossible to exchange travellers' cheques away from the capital. Credit cards are usually only accepted at the major hotels in Kigali.

Eating in Africa - Recommendations:

  • Drink only bottled water
  • Fruits & Veggies: eat what you can peel
  • No "5 second rule", if it hits the ground throw it out.


car

Driving/Transportation

Current U.S. permit is sufficient. Silverback's Adventures, can offer you vehicles with an experienced driver/guide or you can just rent cars. $200-250/day for a 4WD vehicle. Mercator Assistance Tour & Travel can also offer rental cars.


Traveling with a minor?

If only one parent is traveling with a minor, you MUST obtain a notarized letter to take the child out of the country. Without this letter you may not be allowed to board the plane.
